35th Annual Seagull Six

Tom Giardino and Ella Martin Capture Top Honors at the Thirty-fifth Running of the Seagull Six

The thirty-fifth running of the Seagull Six road race took place Sunday morning in down town Woods Hole.

Both the men’s and women’s races were won by local runners this year. Tom Giardino of Falmouth pulled away from Ken Gartner at the mile mark and never looked back. Mr. Giardino who will be running in the Boston Marahon next month finished in 32:44. Ken Gartner out-lasted Geof Newton and finished a minute later in second place.

Ella Martin, an eighteen-year-old high school senior at Falmouth Academy, won the women’s race and finished in sixth place over-all. Ms. Martin lives in Woods Hole and had just a short walk from her house to the starting line. Her time of 36:43 was the fastest women’s time run at the race since 1999. Joanne Jack of Falmouth edged out Lindsay Ruthven of Mashpee to take second place with a time of 41:29.

Almost two hundred runners toed the line this year. The race is organized by the Falmouth Track Club. A group of children from the North Falmouth Elementary School braved the cold weather to staff the water stop at the halfway mark. Mike Norton, a three time winner of the race, was the race director and opted to drive the lead truck this year.
