New Balance High School Outdoor Nationals

Ella Martin, FTC Member and 18-year-old Falmouth Academy graduate, recently attended the New Balance High School Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. on June 15-17. She was third in her heat with a personal record 18:18 in the 5K, good enough for 20th overall. She ran 11:17.06 in the 2-mile for 13th in the Emerging Elite event.

Martin qualified for the nationals by running in twilight meets at Bentley College. She also won the local Seagull Six road race in Woods Hole this spring by 5 minutes in the women’s division. Falmouth Academy does not have a cross country or track team, so Martin has been running on her own against older college women since FA is not a member of the MIAA.

“Ella Martin is probably one of the best runners around that no one has heard of,” says her coach, Ken Gartner of the Falmouth Track Club. Ella trains with Ken, running 50 to 60 miles a week. “It’s very high mileage for a high school girl,” says Gartner.
