Big Day for the FTC at the Oak Bluffs Memorial Day 5k
Nineteen FTC members braved the shark-infested waters of Vineyard Sound on the Island Queen and other assorted watercraft to run in and cheer on their fellow club members at the Oak Bluffs Memorial Day 5k. In recent years this homey race has become a favored desination for club members looking for an enjoyable race and a day-long outing. This year the event attracted the largest FTC contingent ever, with members of all abilities and ages ranging from 6 to 77.
Not only was participation high, but FTCers placed well overall and in their divisions, garnering an impressive collection of hardware. Ella Martin, 19:06, was second woman overall and first female High Schooler. Mike Norton finshed eighth overall in 17:41 and brought home the first place Master award. Right behind Mike, in ninth place, was Ken Gartner, 17:56, who walked away with top honors in the Senior Division. Other age group notables were Caleb Gartner, 26:06, first place in the Junior Division — his 6-year-old brother Henry placed fifth in the same division, with a time of 30:24; Carolyn Bird, 41:30, first in the Venerable Ancient\’s Division (70+), and Doris Beatty, 44:13, second Veneralble Ancient.
Other FTC finishers were Kevin Leach (22:33), Tom Frazier (23:32), John Banner (25:03), Mike Falcone (25:50), Jen McKay (31:51), Pam Falcone (32:26), Jessica Erickson (32:46), Pam Amaral (33:30) and Gloria Leach (44:14).
After warming down and collecting their loot, many FTCers repaired to local watering holes such as the Offshore Ale Company to enjoy some food and drink and to celebrate a great day.
