Coffee O Runners Beg....Turn Down the Heat
August 16, 2002

It was 85 degrees out with 80 percent humidity this Friday night
at the start of the Coffee O Five. To sum it up....it was just a lousy
night to run. The south-west tail wind on Surf Drive was actually a
hindrance this week, as it just sucked up what air there was and made it
that much harder to breath. Still 65 runners showed up which was a new
high for the year. The times weren’t particularly fast and with a few
exceptions, most of the runners looked just plain terrible as they
staggered across the line.
Ed Fitzmaurice of Hyde Park, NY had a good run as he raced home at
sub six minute pace to nab second over-all in his Coffee-O-Five debut.
Mike Norton edged DJ Fairbanks for third. Todd Kirkman, who is prepping
for the upcoming cross country season at Falmouth High School, rounded
out the top five with a 33:28 clocking.
Nanci Cahalane took the women’s race this week as she out ran Lynn
Holmgren by one minute. Pauline Lim took third and Jen DeZarn out
kicked Lindsay Dutton for fifth.
Thirteen-year-old Ed Grace gutted out a fine effort as he was paced
home by his father. The Farrell brothers finished side by side this
week. The Hough family had four entrants this week. Thirteen-year-old
John Hough celebrated his birthday by doing what any normal thirteen
year old would want to do...running five miles on perhaps one of the
toughest nights of the year to run.
The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile road race which starts at
5:30 at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for this
self-timed event and all runners are encouraged to participate. It will
definitely be cooler next week.
