Fast Times Abound at Coffee O

Twenty-eight runners showed up this week for the Coffee-O-Five, the
largest field yet for 2002. Although it was dark as the runners
finished, the 5:30 start took place in daylight for a change. Many of
the runners have started to use the race as part of their preparation
for the upcoming Boston Marathon. There were eight runners in this
weeks field who have made the commitment to toe the line in Hopkington
on Patriots Day.
Jeff List apparently traded in his old coach for a younger and
faster model. He responded by dogging the man every step of the way en
route to a winning time of 29:50. His time was just mere seconds off
of his all time best. Mike Ouimet finished one minute later to take
third for his third time this year. Ben Pring edged out Dave Farrell
for fourth by just 4 seconds. Mr. Pring is one of the few runners who
hasn’t missed a Coffee-O-Five this year.
Abby McGuire was the first woman this week in only her second
appearance at the run. Still unsure of the course, she was escorted
home by Paul Farrell who is a Friday night regular. Laurie Fife edged
out Judi Keller by one minute for second. Doris Beatty and Mary Leonard
rounded out the top five.
With the exception of two runners who were very sore and beat up
from a ski trip last weekend, the times over-all were very fast this
week. Many runners recorded season best times and Bob Richards of
North Falmouth chalked up his best ever five mile time. Mr. Richards
finished in 40:25 and now is aiming to crack the 40 minute barrier.
The Coffee-O-Five is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall
Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for this self-timed event and
all runners are invited to participate. Reflective running vests are
still required at least for the first half of the run.
