Lame three way tie at Coffee O.....Beaulieu First Woman
November 15, 2002

It was a nice night for a run and and even better night for a walk
this Friday night for the Coffee-O-Fivers. Twenty-two runners and
fourteen walkers enjoyed the event this week. Afterwards they were
treated to their choice of bottled water or steaming hot cocoa which
were generously supplied by the friendly event sponsors.

There were at least three brand new faces in the group of walkers
this week. Among them was Joan Doyle who made her first jaunt through
the course and a couple of Ron Pokraka’s golfing buddies who also
completed their first Coffee-O walk. Don Lunn of course was there as
he has been for every one of the walks since its inception.

For the runners it was kind of a lame three way tie for first. The
first place pack included Pete Sampson, the Falmouth High men’s cross
country coach, and Jeff List. For Mr. List of great pumpkin growing
fame, it was one of his final hard efforts before he makes his debut at
the marathon distance later this month. Brian Nelson, who recently
completed his first marathon in Dublin, finished fourth this week. Mr.
Nelson admitted the end of his marathon wasn’t really a whole lot of
fun. Steve Hamel rounded out the top five.

Stace Beaulieu led the women with a clocking of 38:30. Liz Waldman
was the second woman as she lost out to her husband by a mere 5 seconds
in the battle of the Waldmans. For the fifty-five-year-old speedster
from Mashpee, it was her highest Coffee-O finish. Nancy Ash of Tampa,
Florida took third, while Mary Olenick and Judi Keller took fourth and
fifth for the women.

The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which
is held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is
no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are
invited to participate. Reflective running or walking garb is required
through the winter.
