Wind and Rain Hit Post Thanksgiving
Coffee O
³It was a dark and stormy night² and it sure wasn¹t
a nice night to
run. There were eleven determined runners this week, who didn¹t
have enough
sense to stay in out of the rain. One guy even showed up on a bicycle.
Personal bests were out of the question this week, as the fierce southwest
headwind going out just made things kind of miserable. It did turn into
a
beneficial tail-wind coming home, but by then most of the runners were
too
cold and stiff and water-logged to take advantage of it. The only warm
down this week was done gathering around the steaming thermos of hot
chocolate, which was supplied by the kind-hearted folks at Coffee Obsession.
A staggered start was employed this week where the slower runners set
off first in intervals corresponding to their speed. It almost worked
to
perfection as 4 runners who all started at different times, ended up
running
abreast at the end of Walker Street with just a quarter of a mile to
go.
This week it was Joanne Corsano who garnered her first Coffee-O win
as
she out legged Carolyn Bird. Nothing otherwise noteworthy happened among
the other regulars, although Ben Pring did crack the top five for one
of his
first times.
Even a couple of walkers braved the elements this week. It was a
record low for the walking field, but Don Lunn and Joan Pelletier did
show
up to work off their Thanksgiving feasts. Many of the other regulars
for
the walk were rumored to be doing their walking through the shopping
malls
this week.
The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which
is
held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth, although
early starts are allowed. There is no entry fee for this self-timed
event
and all runners and walkers are invited to participate. Reflective clothing
is required through the winter.
