Fumarola and Dutton cop Coffee O wins


There were 42 runners and a large horde of walkers at this week’s
Coffee-O-Five. Jeff Fumarola, who is one of Falmouth’s most jovial
bartenders, took advantage of a rare Friday night off and streaked home
with a Coffee-O-Five win.

He ran a perfectly paced race and finished in just under 30 minutes. Mr. Fumarola was the first bartender to finish this year’s Falmouth Road Race. Ironically it was his mentor behind the bar, Tommy Leonard, who was the first bartender to finish in the first Falmouth Road Race which was held 30 years ago.

The race founder accomplished this feat on his 40th birthday.

Michelle Bianchini took third for the third week in a row. Finishing fourth was Dave Kulis, who was running the event for his first time. Dave Ray of Woods Hole finished in the midst of runners who stormed across the line within 30 seconds of each other. Mr. Ray’s time of 33:46 was good enough to garner him his first top five finish in the event.

Lindsay Dutton won her first Coffee-O-Five with a time of 36:01,
which was one of her fastest finishes in the event. Joan MacClary of
Weston, edged Kris Tholke for second by one minute. Chris Scott
finished hot on Kathleen Savage’s heels to round out the top five.

Joanna York chopped another minute off her five mile personal best time
which she set only last week. Ms. York finished with a time of 40:41
and now has her sights set on the 40 minute mark.

Duke Hutchinson drove all the way down from his home in Watertown
to take in the event. Mr. Hutchinson has been on the New England road
race circuit for over 30 years and is one of the few finishers of the
first Cape Cod Marathon who can still run the distance.

Fred Keller showed no ill effects from his recent finish in the hilly Adirondack
Marathon in New York, as he trotted home in just over 40 minutes.

The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk
which is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in
Falmouth. There is no registration required and all runners and walkers
are invited to participate. Ice cold bottled water is generously
supplied by Coffee Obsession.
