Norton Dusts Four Fleet Footed Fifty
Year Olds (but can't say if fast)
February 28, 2003
Twenty runners and another seven walkers took part in this week¹s
Coffee-O-Five. Mike Norton notched his second win in a row, and his
time of
29:19 was the fastest time chalked up so far in 2003. Steve Hamel finished
third and led a quartet of fleet-footed fifty year olds across the line.
John Martin took fourth in his Coffee-O-Five debut and Jack Carroll
edged
Paul Hartel for fifth.
Pete Landry, who was sidelined for over two months with sore-foot-syndrome,
crossed the line in just over 40 minutes. Steve Pepe journeyed down
from
Bedford, Massachusetts to compete in the event for his first time.
Mr. Martin is a co-founder of the weekly Hyannis five-miler, which was
started over 15 years ago. The Coffee-O-Five was modeled after this
event.
Mr. Martin, who once got up at the crack of dawn and drove to Pinkham
Notch
to compete in the grueling Mount Washington Road Race on the wrong day,
arrived at Town Hall Square on the right night.
Stace Beaulieu won the women¹s race with a time of 4 tics under
40
minutes. Kris Tholke edged Liz Waldman for second and Judi Keller edged
Madeleine Marken for fourth. Carolyn Bird rounded out the women¹s
field.
The Hawk flew into town in time for the start but left his running shoes
at
home in Litchfield, Connecticut.
The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which
is
held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is
no
entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are
welcome
to participate.
