Cold
Night at Coffee O
Thirteen runners and three walkers braved the slick, snowy roads for
this week¹s Coffee-O-Five. The only real race this night was the
race to
get through with the run and return home before the cold Arctic cold
front
arrived. The runners won the race, as it was still 29 degrees out when
the
last runner crossed the line, and the temperatures didn¹t plummet
until
later on in the evening.
Dave Stuebe bolted to a large lead from the start and managed to hold
it until just around the half way mark. Ulandt Kim reeled him at at
two and
a half miles and the two crossed the line together in a tie for second.
Jack Carroll nabbed fourth and Dan Webb just barely hung on for fifth,
as
his time stood up this week to the 42:30 turned in by the late starting
Paul
Hartel. Mr. Hartel is a notorious late starter and must either have
a tough
boss or a bad watch.
Jessica Baker made her first Coffee-O-Five appearance of the new year
and finished fourth over-all and first for the women. Sharon Napier
edged
Madeleine Marken for second and Carolyn Bird was the fourth woman across
the line. For Ms. Marken, it was her first Friday night run since last
fall
when she injured herself in a hiking accident. She didn¹t seem
to lose much
speed in her convalescence.
For the walkers, Donn Lunn joined the Pelletiers in a leisurely late
night stroll through the snow. The Coffee O Five is a weekly five-mile
run
and 2.4 mile walk held at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. The
event
is free and participants for next weeks run are encouraged to wear very,
very warm clothes.
