Harriers from Michigan Fare Very Well at Coffee O Five
The oppressive heat and humidity of this Friday night
took its toll on
some of the Friday night runners. Seventeen-year-old Adam Sprangel of
Jackson, Michigan loped through the course in just over 28 minutes without
breaking that much of a sweat. With no one to follow and having no idea
where the course went, the young speedster was forced to seek out the
painted directional arrows in the road. He not only made it through
the
course without getting lost but he also turned in one of the fastest
times
run on the course for his age group.
The heat didn¹t slow Lynn Holmgren either. She raced through the
course
in just under 33 minutes to take first in the women¹s race. Jordan
Clark,
who also hails from Jackson, Michigan, finished two minutes later to
take
second for the women. Laura Hutchinson edged Wendy Stafford for third
in
the women¹s race. Susan Colburn-Nevier of Seattle, Washington took
fifth
for the women.
Steve Ruane was third for the men for the second week in a row. He led
a contingent of four runners from the U.S. Geological Survey who were
running the race. They may start their own track club. Steve Roe was
fourth for the men. Fifty-year-old Tor Clark gave it all he had en route
to
his fifth place finish in just over 32 minutes. It was one of the top
fifty
and over times turned in for some time, but the veteran runner paid
his dues
afterwards with a mild case of heat stroke.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five-mile road race and 2.5 mile walk
which is held every Friday night at Town Hall Square. There is no entry
fee
for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are welcome to
participate.
