Walkers Stay Home at this Week's Coffee O Five
January 30, 2004
It was up to 23 degrees this Friday night and just ten runners showed
up to brave the ice-laden roads. There were no walkers this week. Running
five miles over icy roads in daylight is no easy feat, it¹s even
tougher at
night. Last week two runners hit the ground, this week one runner ended
up
flat on his face on the shoulder of Surf Drive.
Former Coffee O Five regular Mike Garry finally returned after a long
winter hiatus. The rugged North Falmouth nail pounder was gone for so
long
he had to reintroduce himself to some of his former running mates. He
managed to pick up a pound or two in his break, and maybe lost a minute
or
two as well, but he still raced home with a fine effort of just over
50
minutes and a coveted top ten finish.
Jim Tietje made his first Coffee O appearance of the year and took
third over-all in 36 minutes. Jack Carroll chalked up his fastest Coffee
O
Five time of the year en route to a second place finish. Mr. Carroll
finished in 35:40. Bob Richards took fourth for the fourth time in his
last
five races. Wendy Stafford out-legged Carolyn Bird to take first for
the
women.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five-mile road race and 2.4 mile walk
that is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth.
There is no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and
walkers
are welcome to participate. Reflective running gear and the ability
to fall
gracefully and land well are required through the winter.
