Biggest Field of the Year and Fast Times at Coffee-O Five

It was the largest field of the year, as 64 runners took advantage of the perfect summer running night. It was cool and dry and felt more like mid September than July. Some of the fastest times of the year were turned in this week. Conspicuously absent this week were the loyal Coffee-O Five fans who meet weekly on the porch of a house at the 4.8 mile mark on Walker Street.

It was yet another closely contested womens race this week as Sarah Pollema, of Duluth Minnesota, finished a scant seven seconds ahead of Nancy Correia. The two fast women ran 32:50 and 32:57 respectively, and were the first two women to break 33 minutes this year. Sixteen-year-old Heather Driscoll matched her time of last week of just under seven minute per mile pace, but moved up a spot to third place this week.

Last week’s winner, Eric Critzer, eased up a little this week and took second place with a time of 29:10. Bill Bray just missed breaking 30 minutes and finished third, while Jeff List loped home in fourth place. Chris George of Needham had one of his best Coffee-O Five showings with a time of 31:09, which made the top five this week.

Mike Fishbein ran his first race as a fifty-year-old, and would have placed third in his division if there were such a thing as age divisions at the Coffee-O Five. Battling it our in the old timers division, 62-year-old Richie Williams edged 64-year-old John Hurley by only 16 seconds. Both ran very "young" times of just over 36 minutes. Marriage has been good for Jim White as he knocked two full minutes off his time of last week.

The Coffee-O Five is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are welcome to run.
