The Sad Events of 911 Dampen Turnout for Coffee-O Five

There were only 17 runners this week who ran though the cold and rainy night. Charlie Stock finally returned from his two year Friday night hiatus. The former course record holder found the name of the event had changed, but the course and many of the runners were the same. He set out to run 30 minutes, and that’s exactly what he did with a second to spare. Terry Souza made it two weeks in a row after taking his own long Friday night running break. He finished in 34 minutes, good enough to take 4th place. Peter Landry cracked the top five for his first time with one of his best times. Leading the way this week was Mike Norton, who used his strong finishing kick to finish first over-all.

Karen Smith-Rohrberg won her first Coffee-O-Five, as she finished in just over 43 minutes. Carloyn Bird took second, one of her highest finishes after many many Friday night efforts.

Most of the runners didn’t really care too much how fast they ran or where they placed this week. Instead they had much more important things on their minds. After the run many of the runners left the warm, dry Quarterdeck and ventured back out into the rain with lighted candles at 7:00. With their ring leader, Tommy Leonard leading the way, the group joined the crowd on library lawn to sing patriotic songs and pray or reflect on world peace.

The Coffee-O-Five is held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are welcome to participate.
