It was another wet and rainy night for the Friday Night runners. The conditions weren't quite as ominous as they were the previous week, and the field was twice as large. Greg Stone and Bob Crowley weren't fazed by weather conditions and the two runners plowed through the strong southwest headwind at close to 6 minute per mile pace for the first two miles. Crowley finished in 31:40, his fastest time of the year. Stone, who is hot on the comeback trail, crossed the line in 31 minutes even, his fastest five-mile time in over ten years!
Paul Hartel was fourth and Mike Garry took fifth for the second straight week. Both runners may have caught a break when a runner from New Bedford, who was well ahead of them, got hopelessly lost in the downpour and ended up running at least six miles. Laurie Fife edged Doris Beatty in the women's race.
For some reason this week's race attracted a crop of old-timers, as Ms. Fife was the only runner in the field who was under 40 years old. Perhaps all the younger runners had enough sense to stay out of the rain.
The Friday Night Five is held every week at 5:30 p.m. from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are welcome to participate. A warm sunny day is forecast for next week's "Good Friday Night Five."
