It was a dreary night and although it was 60 degrees out, it felt like 45 degrees. It was apparently a good night for running though, as there were a lot of fast times this week at the Friday Night Five and several people ran personal bests.
Steve Faluotico broke the 30 minute barrier for the first time, with 16 seconds to spare. He crossed the line in second place, just ahead of Ulandt Kim. In a battle of two old guys who used to be very fast, it was Michele Bianchini edging Dan Frye by 15 seconds for fourth place. Just on Frye’s heals was Dave McPherson who turned in a personal best time of 31:46 to nab sixth place. In a battle of two very fast 60 year old men, it was Mike Mullo edging out Richie Williams by a minute.
Nine year old Mike Moore played it smart in his first Friday Night Five of the year, as he ran the whole way sandwiched between the two physicians in this week’s field.
Pauline Lim paced the women’s field this week with a time of 35:26, with Stace Beaulieu taking second. Kris Tholke edged Lisa Lamont for third place.
It took Jim Dupont of Raynham two hours to drive the the three mile traffic back up at the Bourne Bridge, but it only took him 36 minutes to run 5 miles in the Friday Night Five. Because of the back up his hour drive took three hours and he missed the start by and hour. Undaunted he set out alone with his bright orange gloves flapping in the wind.
He was very fortunate that Courtney Bird had freshly marked the course last week with bright visible arrows and he finished right where he started, in the middle of Town Hall Square, without getting lost.
Other first time runners have not been so fortunate as some have ended up in Woods Hole and others in Falmouth Heights.
The Friday Night Five is held every week at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event and all runners are invited to participate. Anyone who ends up stuck in the traffic jam at the Bourne Bridge may consider simply running to Falmouth, as they may get there faster.
