Thirty Runners toed the line for the Memorial Day Weekend edition of the Friday Night Five. It was cool, dry, and sunny with a stiff northeast breeze that would bedevil the runners as they headed back up Surf Drive in the fourth mile.
Bob Crowley, Greg Stone, Tor Clark, Jeff List, and Michael Ouiment charged out of Town Hall Square and down Walker Street. The wind gods were favorable, blowing the lead pack on PR pace. By the end of the 3rd mile, Crowley and Stone had pulled ahead. Crowley looked at his watch and thought to himself that he had a chance to break 30 minutes for the five miles. As the two leaders rounded the turn from Elm Road onto Surf Drive, they tried to put on a surge, but the headwind got the better of them. Crowley pushed to stay on sub-six minute pace, while Stone began to fade.
By the time Crowley turned onto Walker Street in the final mile, he had a 20 second lead over Stone, but the wind had taken its toll. Crowley's pace had slowed. By the time he re-entered Town Hall Square, the 30:00 minute barrier proved elusive. He crossed the finish line in 30:23 -- a PR nevertheless. Stone was second in 30:48. He was followed by Clark (31:04), List (31:27), and Michael Ouimet, who also set a PR with a 31:41.
The women's race proved to be competitive as well. By the end of the first mile on Walker Street, Kathleen Savage and Monica Hough went to the head of the pack with Stace Beaulieu only steps behind. For the next two miles, Hough would take the lead. Then came Surf Drive and that pesky headwind. Savage was feeling stronger and would surge past Hough. Hough hung on hoping to catch Savage on Walker Street, but Savage stayed strong, and Hough could not close the gap. Savage crossed the line in 38:00 with Hough 19 second behind. Stace Beaulieu was a close third in 38:48. The top five was rounded out with veteran runners Karen Smith-Rohrberg and Mary Olenick-Murray coming in 4th and 5th respectively.
The Falmouth Track Club Friday Night Five is held every Friday at Town Hall Square at 5:30 pm. All runners are welcome to test themselves on this accurately measured and marked five mile course. Runners time themselves, and there is no fee.
