Seagull Six 1997
20th Annual Seagull Six Road Race, Woods Hole, MA
Cloudy, spitting rain, 48 degrees
This was the twentieth edition of this race which runs on a hilly loop that starts and ends at the starting line of the Falmouth Road Race. The course follows Quissett Avenue north for about two miles with the first mile completely up hill. Then the loop turns south on Oyster Pond Road to Surf Drive, meeting it at about the 3 mile point of the Falmouth Road Race course which it follows in reverse back to Woods Hole.
Ken Gartner led the race from the beginning, but at the Woods Hole Post Office. with 600 yards to go, he was overtaken by Jim Cronin who hung on for a seven second victory. In the women's race, Eastham's Cheryl Schultz bested the Women's field with a 7 minute victory over Robin Stone of Cataumet. Of particular note was Bill Riley's 9th place finish. Not too shabby for a 62 year old man. His 34:56 time shattered the age group record.
